How to get to Grizedale Forest

Using SatNav or GPS?

Use postcode LA22 OQJ reach Grizedale Forest forest, then follow signs for the trail head.

There are a number of ways to Grizedale but generally most people will head towards Ambleside then Hawkshead to reach us. From Ambleside it will take around 20 min’s.

It is worth noting that many Sat Nav’s will take you via the Ferry on Windermere. This can be busy and will add a lot of time to your journey although it is a unique experience and worth the trip at some point.

From Ambleside head for Coniston, you’ll reach a small one way section by a rugby club, Keep in left hand lane then bear left onto the A593, signposted Coniston, Hawkshead

In about a minute or so you’ll turn left onto the B5286, signposted Hawkshead.

Follow this road until you pass the village and come to a junction. Grizedale is signposted at this junction.

Turn right, you’ll pass a school and come to another signpost. Turn right and follow the road until you arrive at the visitor centre. It is a tight turn, and looks like someone’s driveway, so watch out!

From the A591 Barrow Road you’ll find a sign at Haverthwaite leading you through country lanes to the visitor centre.

  1. My son is 15 in November desperate to race, if he enters next year will he be in a category with much more experienced riders?

    • Hi Jeremy,

Your son will race in the U18 Cat. So yes there will be guys with more experience. Still this is a good thing as he’ll have some good guys to learn from.

  4. Hi Matthew,

Me and a pal want to come along, cheer a mate on and watch the rest of the weekend’s racing. We’ve never been to a race before so are a bit clueless.

Can we confirm that it’s really free to get in and this it’s free to camp? (I know it says it is earlier in the thread, but I just wanted to check as it’s getting close now). Is there a possibility that it is already fully booked as we have left it so late?
Assuming we can get on site, when would be best to arrive? Friday afternoon/night or Saturday morning?

Thanks Matthew, we want to get our weekend plans nailed down rather than winging it, so any advice you can offer is appreciated.

    Many thanks
    James

    • Hi James,

Yes it’s definitely free to come and watch. You can send me a brown paper bag full of cash if you like, but it’s free.

No need to arrive before Saturday morning. But you might want to stay for the party after!

Bring your tent (camping is about 2k down the road form the finish line) and some good walking shoes and something to make some noise and cheers the racers on.

      See you there…

    • it is worth clarifying regarding the camping question. Tents are not allowed in the event field (not in events control) so people with tents need to camp elsewhere – there is a farm campsite about 2 kms down the road and you will need to pay

    • Hi Rich,

All this years events are full. You’ll need to be quick when entries goes live for 2015 in early February.

Masters category run from 29-39 so you’ll be one of the young un in the masters.

If you get chance come along to one of the remaining races this year, to get an idea of what you’ll be racing next year.

      Hope that helps.
